Finding the right Digital Transformation for your business: # Questions to get you started

Published: 23 September 2020

When it comes to the field of digital transformation, there’s a wealth of information available on the many solutions it offers for your business. It’s quite common to feel a little unsure about which route is best for your company when you’re doing research and trying to sift through all the existing materials.

Below, we’ve put together six easy questions to help you find the best digital transformation solution to adapt and strengthen your business.

#1. What do you want your new system to do?

It may seem obvious that this is the first question you should ask yourself, but you’d be surprised how often businesses lack a clear answer. Before you start researching digital transformation solutions more in-depth, we recommend taking a step back and making sure you know exactly why you need to adapt your software.

The answer might be as broad as providing you with a singular point from which you can manage your entire business, or as niche as updating the operations of a particular department, such as accounts and finance, sales, customer service or HR. You could also be upgrading your software for a technical reason – such as wanting to migrate to the cloud, or simply needing a well-supported IT system.

#2. What size is your business?

Next, you’ll need to make sure that the solution you choose is well-suited for the size of your business. There are already significant differences between the needs of a small start-up and those of an established SME, not to mention how drastically different the requirements of both are from those involved in the day-to-day operations of a large enterprise.

Depending on the size of your organisation, you will start with a more or less complex solution, but the end result will be the same – a robust system infrastructure equipped to easily adapt to business growth.

#3. How many locations do you have?

Think about how spread out your team is as well. Do you need software solutions for a centred HQ, or more powerful systems connecting multiple sites across the country? Perhaps your business in multinational, in which case you’ll need digital transformation tools designed to support international operations.

#4. How many users will there be?

In a similar vein, you should also consider the number of users your new system will require. Is it just department heads who will be given access to the software, or whole teams? Are you granting these users different permissions based on their position in the company?  Your answers will inform what types of licenses you need.

#5. Have you considered deployment?

Are you planning on an on-premise deployment, which will allow you to host everything on your own servers, or would you rather opt for a cloud deployment? We recommend hosting your systems on the cloud, but we’re able to suggest solutions for both and support you in implementing them. Haven’t considered deployment yet? No trouble! Your digital transformation partner can assist with choosing the best option for your business.

#6. Is accessibility important to your business?

If you work in an industry where being able to access your systems on the go is essential (e.g. construction), you may need a solution which allows mobile access. Other spheres, meanwhile, might be well-enough suited with standard web access. Alternatively, accessibility might not be a priority to you at all. Don’t worry if you don’t have the answer yet – we can help with that!

Consider also what your digital transformation budget might be – do you have free reign to invest, or just a set chunk of cash dedicated to software modernisation?
